ABOUT THE FILM

Feature Documentary

Length: 90 Minutes – 2026

While Japan is seen by the world as a nation of order, safety, and progress, few outside it understand the vast, systemized industry operating beneath that image. Beneath the Blossoms traces how a 400-year-old system of regulated exploitation — born in the pleasure districts of Edo — evolved into Fuzoku, a legal, industrial-scale sex industry generating billions of dollars a year in one of the world’s largest economies.

Built from two years of on-the-ground filming, interviews with sex workers, hostesses, journalists, academics, and NGOs, Beneath the Blossoms doesn’t follow a single character — it treats the industry itself as its subject, tracing its roots through the Meiji, Taishō, Shōwa, and Reiwa eras to understand not just how it began, but how it functions today, and where it’s heading next.
